Case Study: My C drive is running low space in my Windows 2003 Server. The hard drive has 55GB free. I tried to use Diskpart extend command to extend C drive from 12GB to 30GB, but I got an error that Diskpart failed to extend the volume. Is there a way to extend C drive?
C drive is the common target because it is the default partition where certain files are expected to be found by the operating system while booting the system. When C drive is running out of space, the computer will not work efficiently and stably. Besides, defragment, Windows updates and more installations of applications are not available. To optimize computer performance and maximize disk space usage, it is necessary to extend C drive.
Why Diskpart failed to extend C drive?
As mentioned above, C drive is usually a system and/or boot partition. When using Diskpart extend command, system or boot volumes may be blocked from being extended. You cannot either extend the partition with Diskpart if the system page file is located on the partition.
